Identification
Seperated from Short-eared Owl by its heart shaped face and dark grey back.
Description
This species has dark grey and buff upperparts, white to buff underparts and a diagnostic heart shaped face bordered by a dark brown line. Its entire body, ecept its face, is covered in small black and white spots. Sexes are similar – female significantly larger than male.
Galapagos Distribution
Occurs on most of the larger islands (Isabela, Santa Cruz, Fernandina, Espanola, San Cristobal) excepts Floreana.
Global Distribution
Widespread on all continents except Antarctica.
Status in the Galapagos
Uncommon resident.
