Identification
The only small white egret in the Galapagos.
Description
A small overall white egret with a long yellow bill and pale yellow eye. During the breeding season, both males and females have buff plumes on their head, breast and back. Sexes are similar – male has longer breeding plumes than female. Juvenile similar to adults.
Galapagos Distribution
Found throughout the main archipelago, often near grazing cattle or giant tortoises.
Global Distribution
Found across most of North America , South America,sub-Saharan Africa, India, SE Asia and E Oceania with additional populations in Euarope, and SE Asia.
Status in the Galapagos
Common, self-introduced resident.
