Identification
The only bird of prey in the galapagos with white underparts and dark brown upperparts.
Description
A well known bird of prey with dark brown upperparts, white underparts, a white crown, dark brown eye stripe, yellow eyes and pale grey legs and feet. Females have a fair amount of dark brown streaking on their breasts. This is reduced in males. Juvenile similar to adult, but with scale-like upperparts.
Galapagos Distribution
Usually recorded on larger islands within the main archipelago.
Global Distribution
Widespread breeding visitor to the Northern Hemisphere, overwintering in South America, Africa and S Asia. Resident populations in E and SE Asia and coastal Australia.
Status in the Galapagos
Uncommon non-breeding visitor, usually present from October to April
