Identification

This species’ large white, ‘v’ shaped rump patch distinguishes it from both Band-rumped and Elliot’s Storm Petrels.

Description

A blackish brown storm-petrel with a diagnostic large white ‘v-shaped’ rump patch and notched tail. Legs do not-extend behind tail in flight. Sexes alike and juveniles similar to adults.

Galapagos Distribution

Breeding colonies are located on Pitt, Roca Redondra and Genovesa, but it can be seen throughout the Galapagos Marine Reserve.

Global Distribution

Apart from the Galapagos, this species only breeds on a select few islands off the coast of Peru and Chile. In the non-breeding season, the species disperses across offshore waters between northern Chile and central Mexico.

Status in the Galapagos

Common breeding visitor present in the archipelago throughout the year. The endemic subspecies is abundant at breeding colonies. Present year round.
